Queensland cattle breeding technology receives $2 million investment

Queensland cattle and dairy producers could benefit from a $2 million investment in advanced livestock breeding technology being developed by agricultural biotechnology company Nbryo.

The investment is the first announced under the Queensland Government’s $30 million Sowing the Seeds of Farming Innovation Fund, managed by Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC).

Accelerating cattle breeding

Queensland-based Nbryo is developing reproductive technology designed to accelerate genetic improvement in cattle.

According to the company, its technology could reduce a selective breeding process that can take up to seven years to just seven days, giving producers faster access to selected livestock genetics.

The $2 million investment will support the company’s next stage of development and expansion, with a focus on making advanced breeding technology more accessible to beef and dairy producers.

Nbryo CEO Paul Niven said the company’s focus was on translating scientific innovation into practical outcomes for farmers.

“Every improvement in reproductive efficiency has the potential to deliver significant benefits for producers, the supply chain and the broader agricultural sector,” Mr Niven said.

From innovation to commercial application

The Sowing the Seeds of Farming Innovation Fund has been established to invest in agricultural businesses at different stages of growth, with an emphasis on moving technologies beyond pilot projects and towards commercially scalable applications.

The fund is intended to support innovations that can contribute to on-farm productivity, profitability and sustainability across Queensland’s agricultural sector.

Queensland Minister for Primary Industries Tony Perrett said the Nbryo investment aimed to improve access to livestock genetics, reduce costs, and support productivity in the beef and dairy industries.

The Queensland Government has set a target of increasing the value of the state’s primary production sector to $30 billion by 2030.
