Quad bike deaths falling but safety gaps remain

Work-related quad bike deaths in Australia have declined slightly since new safety standards were introduced, but experts say stronger enforcement and wider adoption of safety measures are needed.

The national standard requires stability improvements, Operator Protector Devices, and clear safety labelling. Analysis of fatality data from 2001 to 2024 shows most deaths occurred on farms, often involving roll-overs, with older riders most at risk.

A significant drop in roll-over deaths in one state was linked to retrofitting older bikes with protective devices, promoting helmet use, and proactive enforcement — an approach recommended nationwide.

Experts stress that most quad bike deaths and serious injuries are preventable through compliance with safety standards, mandatory protective devices, restrictions on children under 16, and greater rider awareness.
