The Victorian Farmers Federation is urging government and retailers to take a pragmatic approach to the planned caged-egg phase-out, warning that recent bird flu outbreaks show the importance of all three farming systems, caged, barn and free range, in maintaining food security.
VFF Egg Group President Brian Ahmed said caged systems play a vital role in stabilising supply during disease events, helping to keep eggs affordable and available for consumers. He stressed the need for policies that balance animal welfare improvements with farm viability and consumer access.
With migratory bird season increasing the risk of biosecurity threats, farmers and backyard chicken owners are being encouraged to stay vigilant, implement biosecurity plans and report sick birds promptly.
